- JS Digger is launched by right clicking “Inspect Element” on a webpage and navigating to the JS Digger tab in the developer tools menu.
- JS Digger conducts a breadth-first search of all the variables on the page. In other words, it starts by scanning the window object and reads every variable on a particular level before moving onto the next.
- Some pages may contain a lot of data, so click the “End Scan Early” button once you are satisfied with the duration of the scan. Keep in mind that scanning a significantly larger amount of variables will yield better results when searching for a value, but may slightly slow down JS Digger.
- Once JS Digger scans the page, it will show you a list of the names, values, and types of every variable.
Viewing and Modifying Variables:
- Refresh the value of a variable by clicking the “refresh” button. This will also refresh the variable’s methods and properties.
- Send a variable to the console by clicking the “send to console” button (console shaped button). This is especially useful when used on functions as clicking on the function in the console will show you its location in the source file. This button will also refresh the value of the variable simultaneously.
- View a variable’s methods and properties by clicking on the “view methods and properties” button ({...} button). This will change the scope that you will be viewing and searching through in JS Digger. View JS Digger’s scope on the top right of the extension.
- Modify a variable’s name or value by changing the value in the text box and pressing [Enter]. You will be prompted with a green success message or a red error message. The error message will contain the error that JS Digger received.
- You can not change the type of a variable without changing its value. Therefore, you can not edit the contents of the type box.
Adjusting View and Searching for Variables:
- Click on the arrow buttons on the bottom of the extension in order to navigate between pages of variables in JS Digger.
- Use the tab limit box on the bottom of the page to change the amount of tabs present on each page. You can view between 1 and 200 tabs per page.
- Use the search bars to search for a specific variable by its name, type, or value relative to the scope you are currently viewing. The scope is shown on the top right corner of the extension.
- Toggle through the three search modes (case insensitive search, case sensitive search, and exact match search) by clicking the "Aa" button next to the search button under each section of the list.
- Change the ordering of the list by clicking on the name, value, or type tab on the top of the page. Clicking the arrow present in each tab will dictate whether the list orders itself in alphabetical or reverse alphabetical order.
Updating Data Collected by JS Digger:
- Refresh the value of a variable immediately by clicking on the tab’s “refresh” button. This will also refresh the variable’s methods and properties.
- Conduct a new scan of the page by pressing the "New Scan" button on the bottom left corner of the app.
